More About Twain’s Vineyard
Prohibition was the blow that set back wine production in Missouri. California escaped the ravages of prohibition by claiming their wine and vineyards were for production of Sacramental wine for the church. By side stepping Prohibition, California was able to sustain its crop and surpass Missouri for dominance in the wine industry. The first winery after Prohibition was reopened by Hermonoff in 1960, but the forty year gap allowed California to establish dominance.Twain's Vineyard is a 70 acre plot of land located deep within the heart of Missouri's largest section of Mark Twain National Forests. The ground was purchased in January of 2006 by Dan and Renee Hopper as a hobby farm and future retirement destination. It was Dan's vision to turn this secluded treasure into a vineyard, weekend retreat with lodging facilities, and a winery.
